Do you have an open door policy?

"Make room for us in your hearts." II Corinthians 7:2

Like a house with many rooms you have many of them in your heart.

Paul implored the believers in Corinth to make space for him in their lives.

He was making that request because He had previously written a strong letter exposing a situation they needed to address. It wasn't received well.

They took it as criticism and were offended. This opened the door for others to come in and discredit Paul.

Over time, however, the matter he wrote rose to the forefront and they saw how Paul had tried to spare them.

In the meantime, offense separated them. Paul was addressing this gap and asking them to open the door again.

Paul didn't regret the critique he had given. He did, in the sense that initially, they were hurt by it. His intent, however, was not to bring pain but to warn.

When God gives a warning it's not always for a reason or reasons you can perceive at the time.

Turning defeat into a WIN 

Take the lemons in your life and open up a lemonade stand

Losing a checker or ping pong game, a race or boxing match, a board game or not winning the lottery - these are examples of when we can "suffer defeat." Friendly, healthy competition has winners and losers. It doesn't define who we are as individuals.

However, in other life situations, we allow defeat to define us: bankruptcy, divorce, fired from a job, loss of a limb, debilitating disease, even things like tragedy, retirement, incarceration, or unexpected loss of a loved one. We often file these devastating events under "defeat" and go through a period of mourning, depression, or shame. We can feel as though "life is over" or that "we're a loser" or "we'll never amount to much because of...." (fill in the blank).

If we stay too long in these things they become baggage that we carry with us into each new season of life. The compounding weight can become very cumbersome.

I recently heard an example of how this plays out: A husband said, "The other day, my wife was washing clothes.

The washing machine is a distance from where I was sitting watching TV, and she and I began talking loudly back and forth, and ended up, getting on each other’s last nerve.

This depressed me because earlier in the day, I had a real good prayer asking Father God to give me patience, and more love for others—trying to fulfill the “love your neighbor as yourself” instructions.

Agitated and frustrated I retreated to my “man cave,” my office.

Jesus loves telling stories to get His point across.

One of the men commented on His story while they were eating. It seems as if he wanted to impress Jesus that they were on the same page spiritually.

Jesus was talking about those He noticed who wanted the "seat of honor." So, this man said, "Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God." At first glance it sounds OK and a good statement, right? (Luke 14)

Jesus had a different view of his comment. Which led Him to tell another story.

This time He talked about someone who prepared a great banquet and invited many guests. They accepted his invitation. He began to make preparations for their coming. Once everything was in place. "He sent his servant to let the people know it was now time to come. Everything was ready.

But they ALL ALIKE began to make excuses." (vs 18)

Then Jesus, in His true story-form-fashion, began to give examples. In each case it sounded legitimate to the ears of those...

1 Corinthians 11: 23-25 We remember His death for us. It symbolizes His body and His blood. It's a cup of thanksgiving, not mourning HIS BODY (The Bread)

1 Peter 2: 24 He took our sins in His body

Isaiah 53: 4-5 By His stripes we are healed. HIS Blood (The wine)

Revelation 1: 5 Washed by His blood

1 Peter 1: 18-19 Redeemed by His blood.

Romans 5: 9 Justified by the blood

Colossians 1: 20 Peace by the blood our covenant with God

Matthew 26: 28 Covenant is a solemn agreement made between God & man. It is sealed by HIS blood, shed for our sins

Acts 2: 46-47 They broke bread from house to house. The requirements for partaking of communion is to be a believer.

Principles of Giving 

Matthew 6:33-34  God knows what we need. When we put God first, He will take care of our things.

2 Corinthians 9:8-11  God is able to Supply.
